Want a few acres for goats and chickens but need to be close to work? Sacramento is your city.
Greg Crimmins gets a shake from his miniature horse Blue last week at his three-quarter-acre ranchette in Rio Linda. Real estate agents say more urbanites are taking advantage of low prices and buying ranchettes in the rural suburbs. Crimmins also has an alpaca, pygmy goats, 50 chickens, 20 ducks and more.
Areas such as Elverta, Rio Linda and Wilton are seeing housing demand from those seeking a country life within commuting distance of Sacramento.
Blue the miniature horse pulls Greg Crimmins in a cart along the Elverta bike trail Wednesday in Rio Linda. “Big fun in a little package,” Crimmins says of his horses, which join a menagerie of more than 70 animals on the semirural property that he and his wife, Lavonne, purchased a few years ago.
